LOS ANGELES

The question in Los Angeles is never what to do, but where to begin. The county is home to many famous attractions in a relatively concentrated space. Your choices include amusement parks, architectural landmarks, art museums and galleries, beaches, parks, hiking and shopping, to name a few. After the sun goes down, you’ll find there’s an abundance of nightlife options, including movies (of course!), as well as live music and comedy provided by performers both legendary and yet-to-be-discovered. A region of great diversity, you'll also discover a world of culinary adventures.

The city of Los Angeles (also known simply as L.A., and nicknamed the "City of Angels") is the most populous city in California. Located on a broad basin in Southern California, the city is surrounded by vast mountain ranges, valleys, forests, beautiful beaches along the Pacific Ocean, and nearby desert. The metropolitan area is the second-most populous in the United States and home to over 17 million people who hail from all parts of the globe. The metropolitan area is spread across Los Angeles County, Orange County, and parts of San Bernardino County, Riverside County, and Ventura County.

LA’s signature drive the Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH to the locals is a sun-drenched stretch of road meandering by Hollywood’s rich lists homes and beaches hosting volleyball games, sunbathers and surfers.  The PCH is everything you imagine would be true in LA stretching 20miles from Santa Monica to Zuma beach in Malibu. Equally beautiful and short drives would be North Sepulveda Boulevard from Redondo Beach to Manhattan Beach or Palos Verdes Drive from Palos Verdes Estates to San Pedro. The later drive is recognisable in the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movies where several scenes were shot.  Miles of coastline, winding roads, cliffs and beaches will have you stopping off for photo opportunities at every turn.

Head inland using the Angeles Crest Scenic Byway cruising along San Gabriel Mountains.  This drive gives you a different view of LA providing access to more secluded spots with spectacular natural wonders. The LA lifestyle is famous for luxurious homes owned by the rich and famous. Driving from Interstate 405 on the Mulholland Drive to Laurel Canyon Boulevard you will pass the homes of Leonardo Di Caprio and Jack Nicholson who own homes along this stretch. Glass houses standing on stilts are an example of the fantastic architecture and futuristic designs.

Driving in LA

  • Even though freeways in LA have official names they are usually referred to in conversation by their number. Eg someone giving directions will say “take the 5 north then the 10 east”
  • Motorcycles can legally split lanes (drive in between traffic lanes), so watch out for them.
  • Don't Honk- Angelenos don't honk unless there is imminent danger or possibly a light tap to get the person distracted at a red light to notice the light is green. It's actually in the CA driver code "Do not honk your horn unless it is a safety warning to avoid a collision." Honking simply because traffic isn't moving just identifies you as a tourist. Don't do it.
