SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco is considered one of the greatest cities in the world for many things, including five-star dining, a happening theater scene, and gay and lesbian culture. And, beyond the fifty-square-mile city, in the surrounding Bay Area, there’s so much more to explore, including Silicon Valley’s innovations, Marin’s Headlands, the vineyards of Napa Valley and Sonoma County, and Berkeley’s free spirit.

San Francisco is a major city in California, the centerpiece of the Bay Area, well-known for its liberal community, hilly terrain, Victorian architecture, scenic beauty, summer fog, and great ethnic and cultural diversity. These are only a few of the aspects of the city that make San Francisco one of the most visited cities in the world. Although huge in terms of offerings, San Francisco is physically quite compact. It is located on a seven-by-seven mile (11 x 11km) square of land at the tip of a peninsula between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific coast. It has a population of 812,000 which represents a small fraction of the entire Bay Area population of 7.1 million.

San Francisco is just one of the cities which make up the entire San Francisco Bay Area. San Francisco's neighbors -Oakland and Berkeley east of the Bay Bridge, Marin County north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Peninsula south of the city are all part of separate counties, each with their own governments and local public transportation systems. San Francisco suffers from crime in some downtown districts like the Tenderloin, Mid Market, 6th Street, Soma and the Western Addition

Created in 1938 the 49-Mile Scenic Drive is a road which takes in a large portion of San Francisco and includes views of the city’s major attractions and natural beauty. Created for tourists, this route starts at City Hall and takes you along numerous landmarks. You are able to pick up a map of the drive at the Visitor Information Centre.  Points of interest along this route are civic centre including city hall, Federal and State office buildings, Bill Graham civic auditorium, Asian art museum, main library and the performing arts centre. Furthermore you can visit Cathedral Hill, Japan Centre and Japantown, Union Square, Chinatown, Nob Hill and of course the Golden Gate Bridge to name a few.

Tips for driving in San Francisco

  • Don’t drive downtown during commute hours as congestion is rife.
  • There are 3 freeways within the city all located south of Market Street (Interstate 80, Interstate 280 and Route 101).
  • Market Street is the City’s main street running diagonally from the Ferry Building to the southwest, through the Castro District, before winding into the central and western neighborhoods.
  • Northward and eastward links to surrounding Bay Area communities are provided by just the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge, respectively.
  • Most city navigation requires use of narrow or congested streets. Expect many one-way streets, especially in the northeastern quadrant of the City.
  • Turn restrictions are common throughout all parts of the City, and left turns often require circling a block (making three rights) instead of just a simple left turn
