FRANKFURT

Frankfurt is the business and financial centre of Germany and the largest city in the German state of Hesse with an approximate population of 710,000. The city is known for its futuristic skyline due to the usual number of skyscrapers compared to other European cities. Due to its central location within Europe it is a major air, rail and highway transport hub, containing one of the busiest international airports worldwide. It is also the centre for culture, education, tourism and web traffic within Germany.

Located centrally on the river Main, Frankfurt is home of the European Central Bank and the German Stock Exchange. Furthermore, it hosts some of the world's most important trade shows, such as the Frankfurt Auto Show, Frankfurt Book Fair and the beautiful Christmas markets.

Frankfurt serves as a starting point for the ‘Romantic Road’ which is arguably Germany’s best scenic and classic drive. This route was created by travel agents in a bid to re-boot the tourism industry in Germany following World War II.  Making your way down to Würzburg will take you on to the official start of the route travelling through Rothenburg, Nordlingen, Augsburg, Hohenschwangau and eventually ending up at Fussen near Munich.

The main shopping area within Frankfurt is Zeil where you can explore and find every shop imagineable. Fressgrass offers the perfect introduction to German cuisine with lots of inviting little cafes and restaurants to lure you in. The city has ample attractions including Palmengarten botanical gardens, Frankfurt Zoo, panoramic views from Main Tower, the history museum and the holocaust memorial wall.

With a huge amount of domestic and international flights landing in Frankfurt daily it makes for the ideal location to explore central Germany. One of the most popular day trips is to the idyllic Rhine River Valley. Equally, visiting the Heidelberg Castle is a top attraction stopping off at many wineries and castles beforehand. Less than 2 hours from Frankfurt is Germany’s oldest city Trier dating back to 2000 BC which gives you an insight into remnants of the Roman colony which began in 16BC. Those of you looking to escape the city for some fresh air may decide to visit the Black Forest giving you the opportunity to hike, cycle or enjoy a horse ride. Be sure not to miss picturesque Baden Baden en route!

Frankfurt Driving Tips:

What is characteristic about Germany is their road culture that many foreign drivers remark on. This culture is because of strict enforcement of rules which include…

  • Overtaking is done on the left, not right.
  • Driving too close to the vehicle in front has a fine up to 400 Euros
  • Not using turning signals is a 10 euro fine.
  • Exceeding the speed limit in built-up areas costs 15 EUR.
  • Half of German motorways have speed limits applied, either 120, 100 or 80 km per hour.
  • On the national roads, marked with the letter B, and generally outside built up areas speed is limited to 100 km / h. In built-up areas it is 50 km / h.
