LONDON HEATHROW

London Heathrow Airport (IATA: LHR, ICAO: EGLL) is a major international airport serving London, England formally known as London Airport from 1946 until 1965. Located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, in West London, Heathrow is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and Europe. It also comes in at third place in the worldwide spectrum in terms of passenger traffic. In 2014 it handled a record 73.4 million passengers and increases every year.

Along with GatwickStanstedLutonSouthend and London City, Heathrow is one of six airports with scheduled services serving the London area, although only Heathrow and London City are within Greater London. Starting from very humble beginnings, Heathrow started off in 1929 as a small airfield which at the time was surrounded by farms and orchards. Development into the large airport it is now started in 1944 to become capable of handling aircraft bound for long distance trips to the Far East, however by the time it was completed World War II had ended. The government went ahead with developments opening London Airport in 1946 which eventually was renamed as the current Heathrow in 1966 (named largely after the land on which it was built).

Today, Heathrow is used by 90 different airlines flying to 170 destinations worldwide. 93% of passengers in 2014 flew internationally with 3 million of those bound for JFK airport in New York. A further 7% took flights domestically around the UK.  London is an expensive city so those of you travelling on a budget will need to be careful with daily allowances. There are bicycle ranks located all over the city, which act as an alternative to taking your car through the busy streets.

London is split into districts comprising of central areas classed as the City of London, City of Westminster, Chelsea and Kensington. Canary Wharf is the established financial district, the west end the place to be for shopping and entertainment and the Mayfair district popular with the rich and famous containing luxury hotels and restaurants. Due to influence by immigrants over the centuries London has a very diverse range of cultures, so much so that it is now the second largest immigrant population behind New York. This is displayed in the vast range of architecture, festivals, religions, buildings and people. The biggest change from historical London was following the great fire in 1666 which meant most buildings had to be rebuilt.

The city has an oceanic climate with most rain and snow falling between October and January. The hottest months are between June and September. Year round, London plays host to an array of events most notably fashion, music and drama.
