MUNICH
Munich is the capital city of Bavaria. Within the city limits, Munich has a population of more than 1.4 million, making it the third most populous city in Germany. Munich, located at the river Isar in the south of Bavaria, is famous for its beautiful architecture, fine culture, and the annual Oktoberfest beer celebration. Munich's cultural scene is second to none in Germany, with the museums even considered by some to outrank Berlin in quality. Many travelers to Munich are absolutely stunned by the quality of the architecture. Although it was heavily damaged by allied bombing during World War II, many of its historic buildings have been rebuilt and the city center appears mostly as it did in the late 1800s including its largest church, the Frauenkirche, and the famous city hall (Neues Rathaus).
The legendary ‘Romantic Road’ of Germany can be found 82 miles South West of Munich in Füssen, although often this area is used as the end of the road rather than the start. Castle Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular destinations in Europe for its fairytale-like stature on one of the world’s most serene gorges. Travelling up the route through Pfaffenwinkel famous for its churches and medieval Augsburg with its 2000 year old past coming to life, continue on through Dinkelsbühl boasting 16 fortified towers, several authentic city gates and an original ring wall. Spend a night in the 1000 year old Castle Hotel Colmberg before heading on to Rothenburg. This is the best preserved medieval town in Germany and picture-perfect. Finally, finish this magical journey in Würzburg located in the heart of the Franken wine region, filled with top class wines, gourmet food and architectural gems such as the Residence Palace (UNESCO World Heritage listed).
Munich is also ideally situated near to the Bavarian Alps region, giving you further stunning views to find. On sunny days the mountains of the Bavarian Alps can be seen from Munich, so why not take a day trip there? The best time to drive the Deutsche Alpenstrasse (German Alpine Road) is early spring or early autumn. In winter often the mountain passes are shut down with even the highways which are left open being highly dangerous. The route stretches some 300 miles (480 kms) and is acclaimed as one of the most scenic in all of Europe.
Further tourist day trips from Munich could be Garmisch, Partenkirschen and Salzburg. The Lake District around Salzburg also makes for a particular highlight. Try some bobsleighing in Berchtesgaden, a village in the German Alps with several ski slopes. Nearby natural Lake Königsee is also worth a visit and a great photo opportunity with its emerald-green colour located near the Austrian border in the southeast of Berchtesgadener.
