SCOTLAND
Bonnie Scotland has long been a bucket-list destination for many people around the globe. With the recent announcement and launch of the new tourist road in the Scottish highlands, this beautiful small country is constantly providing plenty of reasons to visit. The NC500 tourist route, launched in March 2015 is the latest tourist road to emerge rivalling other famous self-drive worthy itineraries such as the American Route 66 or the Australian Great Ocean Road. Across the globe visitors often make the journey to a destination in aid of completing these roads which makes this newly unveiled feature of the Highlands very exciting news indeed.
The Proclaimers famously sung about walking 500 miles, well now it’s your chance to drive 500 miles around this route connecting the North, West and East coasts of the Highlands. Marketed as a 5 day trip, it is also not a lengthy road trip so well suited to those with less time on their hands. Nonetheless there is an itinerary for everyone from the shoe-string camping style to comfortable and luxurious hotels along the way. For the laid back golfers or action-packed adventurers this route will impress.
Any trip to Scotland would not be complete without visiting the capital Edinburgh and sampling some of the delicacies. As you will soon find out the Scots have somewhat of a sweet tooth with sugary delights such as Tablet, Edinburgh Rock, Macaroon bars and Shortbread. You can make your way underground and experience the thrill of historic life in Edinburgh sure to have you jumping out your skin or admire the view of the castle sitting on top of what is actually an extinct volcano. The best time to visit Edinburgh would be during the month of August when the fringe festival takes place. For one month the largest arts and entertainment festival in the world takes over and is a well-known platform for many up and coming performers to break into the big time.
Drive a mere hour from Edinburgh and you will come into Glasgow, another major city along the central belt of Scotland. Glasgow has a very different vibe to Edinburgh as it is a port city based along the River Clyde. Glasgow has a thriving music scene and is famed for its Victorian architecture.
Furthermore, Scotland also has an array of smaller village towns, lochs, national parks and mountains which are waiting to be discovered on your drive. Perhaps on your way up to the NC500 you could stop off at Ben Nevis, the largest mountain in the British Isles and close by to picturesque Fort William. The Cairngorms national park is another area of spectacular beauty, with large native forests, clean rivers and lochs, moorland, farmland and wildlife.
