Auckland

With more boats per capita than anywhere else in the world, the “City of Sails” should be on everyone’s bucket list. Situated on the North Island of New Zealand, Auckland has grown up to become the largest and most populous city in the country and indeed Polynesia as a whole with over 1.5 million residents currently calling it home.

Geographically it sprawls over a large area which has led to a design focus on the motorway systems throughout the city. Public transport is not cheap by international standards and can be frustrating, so without a doubt the best way to explore this city is by rental vehicle. Luckily, globalCARS is always on hand to arrange your next rental car to suit!

Often used as the starting point to many an epic adventure, Auckland being at the top of the North Island is a logical place to start when doing a trip down through both Islands or completing a loop of the North. It is also well positioned for your adventure up to the Bay of Islands where the Oceanic climate is much milder.

Driving over the Waitemata Harbour on the Auckland Harbour Bridge you will find eight lanes connecting St Marys Bay with Northcote in the former North Shore City. As Auckland disappears from your rear view mirror, continue North past Hatfield’s Beach before stopping in a seaside village named Waiwera. The main attraction here is the hot springs, living up to the village name which means ‘hot water’ in Maori. From there you can choose to travel up the rugged west coast or the refined and worldly east coast through numerous rural towns towards the Bay of Islands.

Alternatively you may choose to explore the incredible area surrounding Auckland where you will find regional parks, endless beaches and some of the most serene landscape you have ever seen. Head North for the ultimate laid-back lifestyle, West for regional natural wonders, East for sparkling blue waters and South where history, adventure and culture combine.

Use our handy car rental search engine to find your next rental car now!

  • Drive on the left hand side of the road
