Cairns
Cairns is a major hit with the tourism industry because of its warmer climate and close proximity to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. The city is surrounded by rainforest and is supported by agricultural activities including sugar cane, bananas, tea and home to the world’s first tropical fruit wine region.
Having a car is useful in Cairns to see the surrounding attractions without having to book on to a tour. We have access to numerous rental partners located in the area with the best low prices available. With no beach in central Cairns you are sure to want to drive north to find a beautiful tropical paradise to relax and take a walk. Be mindful of which season you visit as “stinger season” is between October and May meaning it is a better option to swim in the artificial lagoon on the promenade near the pier than in the sea.
The market town of Kuranda is an interesting place to drive to, approximately 25 kms from Cairns via the Eastern Kuranda Range road or along the Western Kennedy Highway. This picturesque mountain retreat is surrounded by World Heritage rainforest and the mighty Barron Falls. Local markets sell souvenirs and are open 7 days a week.
The Western approach from Mareeba to Kuranda is a scenic experience in itself through orchards, coffee plantations and produce farms. Breaking through the Great Dividing Range you will come into the outskirts of the village. As an alternative, the Eastern approach will take you through a steep ascent from Smithfield twisting through thick jungle, alongside rocky waterfalls and if you’re lucky you might just catch a young cassowary hurrying along the edge of the forest. Follow through over the high level bridge over the Barron River, past the cemetery and on to Kuranda.
Get a taste for the real Aussie outback by hiring a car and driving to the Undara Lava Tubes and volcanic park. Over 190,000 years ago a major volcanic eruption caused this unique geographical feature where nature enthusiasts will marvel and can enjoy highly regarded and informative tours going through each day.
There are plenty of self-drive itineraries to suit the time you have going through the Atherton Tablelands (Cairns Highlands) area. Similarly the ‘Great Tropical Drive’ spanning 1545 kms takes you through a heavenly coastal drive starting in Cooktown. Continue travelling through Cairns and Townsville following this road to Ayr in the south, plus the rural communities of Mareeba, Atherton and Charters Towers. Contained within this blissful drive is a series of 13 shorter itineraries or Tropical Discovery Trails giving visitors the chance to experience short bursts of driving.
Explore the Cairns and Townsville tropics with these driving tips:
- Be wary of turning in roundabouts. A big issue is dual lane roundabouts, be mindful of the arrows on the road and try to avoid accident hotspots such as Smithfield roundabout.
- Cairns drivers tend not to use their indicators, always anticipate that they can and will do anything without notice.
- Stick to the left unless overtaking a car whilst on dual lanes.
- Take your time driving up and down mountainous roads such as the one going to Kuranda especially in the rain.
- Similarly, don’t rush during periods of heavy rain which are plentiful during wet season.
