For this reason, renting a motor vehicle is the perfect option in getting around and seeing the sights. The Gold Coast is a large urban coastal area with a population of around 550,000. It is popular with both Australians and overseas travellers with Surfers Paradise being the major area for tourist activity.

Referred to as “the green behind the gold” symbolising the Australian national colours, the Gold Coast Hinterland has some of the best scenic drives in the country. Home to three national parks and bundles of mountains, waterfalls, creeks and natural rock formations, the Hinterlands will reward you with fantastic views, wineries and some secret mountain top cafes. This area covers the Tweed Range, Nimmel Range, Tamborine Mountain, Numinbah Valley, eastern parts of the McPherson Range and western parts of the Gold Coast and is a UNESCO world heritage listed area.

To get the most out of your drive around the Gold Coast, the ultimate scenic drive is a round trip starting at Surfers Paradise.  From here make your way to the Gold coast Highway and head north towards Mount Tamborine. Well worth a look would be Sanctuary Cove just past Runaway Bay with a prestige golf course development and boutique shopping village. From here make your way back on to the Pacific Highway and just past Dreamworld take the left hand exit on to Mount Tamborine.

On the other side of the mountain you will find Nerang where you will want to jump back on to the Pacific Highway and head south following signs to Springbrook. You will find yourself passing numerous yellow signs with curvy lines warning you of sharp corners, narrow curved wooden bridges and hairpins. Although this road is generally safe, a little extra care when driving this road wouldn’t go a miss so take your time! Springbrook is best for its scenic lookout points and will have plenty of cafes to keep you amused.

Take yourself back down the mountain and on to Natural Arch which requires a short bush walk but well worthy of a look. Following the road back down and through the valley you will cross the QLD/NSW border and the view here is phenomenal. Continue through to Murwillumbah passing by the changing scenery of farmlands, dainty towns and ending up in sugar cane fields.

After stopping off for a cold beverage in Murwillumbah you can make your way to the free way and cruise to Coolangatta along the new and fairly scenic motorway.  Following the coastal road from Coolangatta you will end up back where you started at Surfers Paradise, driving past some of the most famous surf breaks in the world.  Only an hour south of the gold coast you can also find the ever popular Byron Bay, which may serve as a lovely added extra to your round trip drive.

Drive the Gold Coast Tips:

• Most of our car rental partners are located centrally in the main business suburb between the Gold Coast Highway and Surfers Paradise Boulevard.
• Due to having several business centres, the Gold Coast does not suffer from the same congestion. Peak driving times are 7am to 8:30am and 3:30pm to 5pm.
• Parking metres are found in the busiest streets of Surfers Paradise, Southport and Burleigh Heads, but free parking can be found in streets a few blocks away.
• Paid parking areas in Surfers Paradise and Southport operated by shopping centres and city council only charge $1 per hour eg Bruce Bishop Car Park adjacent to the transit centre.
• Avoid roads such as Bundall Road, Southport-Nerang Road, the Gold Coast Highway at Surfers Paradise and the Pacific Motorway between Nerang and Palm Beach during peak rush hours to avoid heavier traffic.
