Hobart:

Hello Hobart! Capital city of the Australian state Tasmania, this city is small in comparison to the larger mainland Australian cities. With a population of 250,000, Hobart is also known as being one of the coldest of the Australian cities often experiencing four distinct seasons in the year. The best option in terms of getting around Hobart is having your own vehicle which is where we come in to help!

With no passenger trains on the island and internal flights being pricey, a self drive itinerary is the way to go in Tasmania for the most enjoyable experience. Hobart serves as a fantastic starting point to your Tasmanian drive. Be sure not to miss the Saturday morning Salamanca Market which has been on-going since 1972.

Drive up to the top of Mount Wellington for spectacular views of the city and harbour. If the weather is not so clear then you can always try the nearby Mount Nelson Signal Station instead, where you can stop for a picnic and enjoy the views over Hobart and Bruny Island.

Tasmania is rich in convict history being a major historical re-settlement area. From Hobart drive 25 minutes to Richmond passing through Coal River Valley wine region. Reaching Richmond you can delve into the past and learn about Tasmania’s colonial heritage. This area is also home to Australia’s oldest bridge, oldest still-standing Catholic Church and oldest jail. Furthermore you can visit Old Hobart Town which is a reconstructed miniature scale model of how Hobart used to look.

Drive on to Port Arthur, the former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula and one of Australia’s most significant heritage areas. You can also visit an open-air museum within this small town alongside going on historic ghost tours and a harbour cruise.

Battery Point is a suburb of Hobart located immediately south of the Central business district.  Home to some of the best preserved 19th century charm, the local s are welcoming and the area is perfect for a leisurely stroll around historic buildings with great water views.

Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), 655 Main Road, Berriedale. Wednesday-Monday, 10am-5pm. Pioneered by David Walsh of Moorilla fame, this recently opened (2011) museum features alternative and some confronting art to make you think. Regularly has travelling exhibitions from international artists. Public transport will take you there, take Metro bus number 36, 37, 42 or X1 or the MONA MR-1 fast ferry from Brooke Street Pier on Hobart's waterfront. Both transport alternatives will take roughly 30-40 minutes. There is plenty of free public car parking amongst the MONA Vineyards.

Close to Hobart and a must see on any driving holiday to Tasmania is Bruny Island

Once in Hobart, you can drive south to the city of Kingston and then through the sleepy townships of Margate, Snug, Oyster Cove and Kettering. From Kettering, you can catch the vehicular ferry, The Mirambeena, across to Bruny Island.

Home to the South Bruny National Park, the island offers stunning natural beauty partnered with a range of boutique accommodation, food and tour experiences.

The highly acclaimed Bruny Island Cruises cruise was this year named one of the top 100 experiences in the world by Travel and Leisure Magazine, and the company is also the Australian Small Business of the Year, Tasmanian Business of the Year and First-Generation Family Business of the Year.

Bruny Island is also home to the southern-most licenced pub in Australia and the country's most-southern vineyard. Artisan cheese-maker Nick Haddow operates the Bruny Island Cheese Company which produces highly acclaimed cheese products.

Drive Hobart:

  • Tasmania has a small population and there are very few freeways however the two-lane roads are well-maintained and the traffic is light
  • Some car rental contracts have special conditions for unsealed roads Check with globalCARS when booking your car rental.
  • When estimating driving distances, allow extra time for your journey as roads are often winding and steep – the island is bigger than you think!
