 MELBOURNE

Melbourne is regularly voted as “the world’s most liveable city” with its distinctly European feel and is well known for its weather forecast of four seasons in one day.  It is a fantastic city located in the Australian state of Victoria and home to over 3 million residents. Melbourne is a tourist trap with plenty of things to see and do and often plays host to a vast array of annual events such as music gigs, sports, the arts and theatre to give you numerous options in terms of entertainment.

As a large city the best way to navigate your way around is by rental car which gives you the flexibility and ease of visiting the best parts. The CBD is constantly thriving with activity offering countless restaurants, bars and shopping areas with Southbank being a particular entertainment hub including the Crown Casino complex.

Melbourne’s most popular beach area is located at St Kilda which also has bars, restaurants and a roaring nightlife scene.  Albert Park on the south side is the chosen location for annual grand prix races and Fitzroy will be where to find your stylish hipster type locals, again an area with quaint little cafes and a refreshing atmosphere.

Additionally Melbourne is a great base point for visiting other self-drive worthy routes such as the Great Ocean Road and Grampians National Park. Popular day trips also include Yarra Valley wineries, Red Hill Markets and Hot Springs, Hanging Rock – a scenic drive through the Macedon Ranges leading to Victoria’s most spectacular unique rock or Lake Mountain in winter. Phillip Island also serves as a family friendly drive spending the whole day there and driving home in the evening after the sunset penguin parade.

Your best self-drive holiday ever is waiting and globalCARS are ready to make it happen!

 Driving in Melbourne

  • Drive on the left hand side
  • Carry your drivers’ license with you at all times
  • Trams have right of way so make sure that you don’t pass a tram if it reaches a tram spot – stay behind it.
  • Be aware of the “Hook Turn” in the CBD. Clearly identified by an over head sign at an intersection, a hook turn is when you travel forward in the left hand land and wait on the left hand side of the road. When traffic lights turn amber and the lane on the right hand side is clear of any oncoming traffic, take a wide turn to the right.
  • Keep out of the way of trams and buses travelling in the tram lanes. Give way to a tram when it is moving into or crossing a roundabout.
